Although there are only eight license cultivators in the state, many have crops planted but aren’t yet operating at full capacity.
Panh attests that Dragonfly has struggled to keep up with demand for quality cannabis flower. Although they have been able to order some product from the state’s cultivators, it’s not enough to meet all demands. Panh notes that the shortage is compound by a shortage of qualified medical providers certified to prescribe medicinal cannabis to patients. At Dragonfly’s opening in March, there were only 17 enroll in their program – representing just 1% of people in California with qualifying conditions. However, Panh anticipates that demand for the drug will increase in the coming years, potentially leading to bottlenecks for patients trying to obtain their medicine.
Another issue is the large number of individuals with medical cannabis cards who do not reside in Utah. This presents a major obstacle for the company. As they want to assist patients throughout the entire state, not just those from Salt Lake County. Dragonfly has responded by expanding delivery services into some select counties and opening a drive-thru at their South Ogden location. This service is offering exclusively to veterans and pre-register medical cannabis patients, so they don’t need to leave their vehicle.
